Williams Town is the southernmost settlement on Little Exuma, Bahamas, and a site of great historical significance. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the village was the center of the island's lucrative salt industry, with the nearby salt pond being one of the largest in the Bahamas. A white obelisk, which still stands on a hill today, once served as a navigational aid for ships arriving to load salt. Williams Town also houses the ruins of the Hermitage plantation, built by the Kelsall family, which documents the history of cotton production. The coastline is characterized by rugged cliffs and secluded beaches, such as the famous Tropic of Cancer Beach located nearby. The community preserves its identity through traditional festivals and the maintenance of its historical sites. Despite its remoteness, the village is for history enthusiasts as it vividly illustrates the harsh living conditions of the colonial era and the transition to freedom.
