Rolletown is a history-rich settlement on Great Exuma, located approximately 8 kilometers east of George Town. The village was named after Lord John Rolle, a British Loyalist who owned vast plantations on the island during the late 18th century. Following his death in 1835, he bequeathed his lands to his formerly enslaved workers, leading to the creation of a unique community where land is still collectively inherited within the Rolle families today. The settlement is situated on a hill, providing expansive views over the turquoise waters of Elizabeth Harbour. Significant landmarks include historical tombs from the Loyalist era, most notably the tomb of a young woman dating back to 1792. Residents of Rolletown take great pride in maintaining their traditions and the history of their ancestors. Today, the village is an important cultural heritage site in the Bahamas, attracting visitors interested in the era of cotton plantations and emancipation.
