  • The bridge only has one lane, so approach slowly and yield to oncoming traffic.
  • The current under the bridge can be incredibly strong; admire the animated blue water from the safety of the shore rather than swimming near the pillars.
  • It’s a great quick stop for photography, offering sweeping views of the surrounding cays and sandbars.

The Ferry is a strategically important settlement at the southeastern end of Great Exuma, located directly at the narrow waterway that separates Great Exuma from Little Exuma. The name commemorates the period before 1966 when travelers and goods had to be transported across the strait by small boats. Today, the Ferry Bridge, a single-lane bridge, connects the two islands, making the site an indispensable transportation hub. The surrounding environment is characterized by shallow lagoons and mangroves, which constitute a vital ecosystem for juvenile fish and seabirds. Near the bridge, historical remains of buildings once used for trade and postal distribution can be found. The settlement itself is small, consisting primarily of residential homes arranged along the coastline. Despite its central role in island traffic, The Ferry has maintained a quiet, village-like atmosphere where fishing remains a significant activity for the local residents.
