George Town is the capital of the Exuma district, located on Great Exuma along the shores of the expansive Elizabeth Harbour. Named in honor of King George III, the town became a significant settlement for British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolutionary War in the late 18th century. The area's history is deeply intertwined with Lord Denys Rolle, who established vast cotton plantations; his legacy persists through the many local residents who carry the Rolle surname. Elizabeth Harbour is renowned as one of the finest natural harbors in the world, providing a sanctuary for sailors and hosting the annual National Family Island Regatta. George Town serves as the administrative, commercial, and transportation hub for the entire Exuma Cays chain. The town's architecture features classic British colonial influences, most notably in the pink Government Administrative Building. Nearby, the Tropic of Cancer Beach marks the precise geographical line where the tropic passes through the island.
