French Fort Tobago (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

Fort King George in Scarborough, formerly known as Fort Castries, is one of the most significant testimonies to the French military presence on Tobago. Built during the French occupation between 1781 and 1793, its architecture reflects the advanced European fortification techniques of the 18th century. Its strategic position on a hill overlooking Rockley Bay allowed for comprehensive control of maritime traffic and the defense of the capital. During the Napoleonic Wars, control of the fort changed hands several times between the British and the French, highlighting the fierce rivalry over the valuable Caribbean islands. Today, the well-preserved grounds house the Tobago Museum, which displays artifacts from the pre-Columbian era as well as colonial relics. The massive cannon batteries and restored officers' quarters provide a vivid impression of garrison life during that period. Visitors appreciate not only the historical depth but also the wide panoramic view over the coast of Tobago.
