Dutch Fort Tobago
Fort James in Plymouth is the oldest fort in Tobago and a testament to the brief but significant Dutch presence on the island. Established in the 1650s, the fort was built to protect the Dutch settlers in Great Courland Bay from rival European powers, including the British, French, and even Courlanders. Tobago was a highly contested territory, famously changing hands over 30 times throughout the colonial era. The structure was originally built using local coral stone and served as a vital defensive outpost during the 17th-century naval wars. Today, visitors can still see the original iron cannons and remnants of the barracks, offering a glimpse into military life during that turbulent period. The fort provides an excellent vantage point overlooking the Caribbean Sea, emphasizing its strategic importance for controlling trade routes. It stands as a silent witness to the complex geopolitical struggles that defined the early history of Tobago.
