Kipia Peak

Kipia Peak, also frequently referred to as Mount Kineti, is the highest elevation in South Sudan, reaching a height of 3187 meters. It is located in the Imatong Mountain range within Eastern Equatoria State, near the international border with Uganda. The peak is the culminating point of a rugged massif composed geologically of ancient crystalline basement rocks such as gneiss and granite. Due to its significant altitude, Kipia Peak supports a unique Afromontane flora, including giant lobelias and specialized Ericaceous shrubs adapted to the cool, often mist-shrouded environment. Climbing the peak is physically demanding but gives spectacular vistas over the vast plains of East Africa. During the colonial era, the mountain was an essential landmark for geographical surveys and remains today a powerful symbol of national identity. It also functions as a critical water catchment area, with its runoff sustaining agriculture in the lower surrounding regions.
