Kidepo Game Reserve is situated in Eastern Equatoria State of South Sudan, directly adjacent to the international border with Uganda. Spanning an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometers, it forms a continuous ecological unit with Uganda's Kidepo Valley National Park. The terrain is characterized by semi-arid savanna, open grasslands, and rugged hills, providing a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife including elephants, giraffes, lions, and buffaloes. Established as a protected area in 1970, the reserve serves as a critical corridor for animals migrating within the larger Kidepo ecosystem. Historically, the region faced significant challenges due to poaching during periods of civil unrest, but recent conservation efforts are focused on restoring its ecological integrity. The area is also recognized as an Important Bird Area, hosting hundreds of resident and migratory bird species throughout the year.

The dry season from November to March and June to September is best for spotting predators and buffalo herds in Kidepo Game Reserve. Animals gather at remaining waterholes during these months.
