Fort Berkeley (South Sudan)

Weather…

Fort Berkeley was a key British colonial outpost on the eastern bank of the White Nile, near the Bedden Rapids in present-day South Sudan. Established in the late 19th century, it was intended to consolidate the British presence on the Upper Nile and secure the shipping route against rival European powers and local insurgents. Geographically, the fort benefited from its location at a narrowing of the river, enabling effective control of vessel traffic. The fortification served as a logistical hub for military expeditions and a telegraph station connecting the south with Khartoum. In the colonial hierarchy, Fort Berkeley ranked among the most important stations in Equatoria Province before losing strategic relevance following the founding of Juba. Historical accounts describe daily life at the fort as challenging, shaped by extreme climate and tropical diseases. Today, the structural remains are overgrown with vegetation, yet the site remains a significant monument to British imperial strategy in the Nile Basin and the opening of the African Great Lakes region.
