Gondokoro Island (South Sudan)

Weather…

Gondokoro Island is a historically significant island in the White Nile, located just north of present-day Juba in South Sudan. During the 19th century, Gondokoro served as the northernmost navigable point on the Nile for large expeditions and was a major trading hub for ivory and slaves. In 1848, Austrian missionaries established a station here, though it was abandoned after a few years due to the harsh climate and tropical diseases. Renowned explorers such as Samuel Baker, John Speke, and James Grant used the island as a strategic base for their journeys to discover the source of the Nile. In 1871, Baker proclaimed the site 'Ismailia' and designated it the capital of the Equatoria Province on behalf of the Egyptian Khedive. Geographically, the island is characterized by seasonally flooded riparian zones and dense papyrus thickets. Today, Gondokoro is primarily recognized as an archaeological and historical site that bears witness to early colonial history and the golden age of African exploration.
