Gondokoro Trading Post (South Sudan)

Weather…

Gondokoro was one of the most significant historical trading posts on the eastern bank of the White Nile, near present-day Juba. In the 19th century, it marked the end of the navigable route for larger vessels from the north, making it an indispensable transshipment point for explorers, ivory traders, and slave hunters. Renowned researchers such as Samuel Baker, John Hanning Speke, and James Grant used Gondokoro as a base for their search for the Nile's source. Geographically, the site is located at a narrowing of the river, providing a natural defensive line. In 1871, Baker declared Gondokoro, under the name Ismailia, the capital of the Egyptian province of Equatoria to suppress the slave trade in the region. Despite these efforts, the post remained a hub for illicit activities for a long time before the administration was moved downstream to Lado due to disease and hostile tribes. Today, few physical remains of the post survive, yet its historical role as a gateway to the Central African interior remains a central chapter in Nile exploration.
