Orșova is a unique port city located on the shores of the Iron Gates reservoir, where the Danube flows through a dramatic gorge between the mountains. The city as it stands today is a result of a massive relocation project in the early 1970s; the original Roman settlement of Dierna and the old town were entirely submerged by the rising waters following the construction of the Iron Gates I dam. This 'sunken city' legacy gives Orșova a poignant atmosphere, with the new town built in a tiered fashion overlooking the beautiful Cerna Bay. It serves as the primary gateway for boat trips to the famous Danube Cauldrons, the Mraconia Monastery, and the massive rock sculpture of Decebalus. An architectural highlight is the Roman Catholic Church, a modern masterpiece with a distinctive cross-like shape when viewed from above. Surrounded by the protected landscapes of the Iron Gates Natural Park, Orșova has a blend of tragic history, modern resilience, and some of the most wide-open river scenery in Europe.
