Nera Gorges (Romania)

Weather…

The Nera Gorges-Beușnița National Park is located in the southern part of the Anina Mountains in Caraș-Severin County, protecting a spectacular karst landscape. The centerpiece is the Nera Gorges, which, at approximately 22 kilometers in length, represent the longest gorges of their kind in Romania. The Nera River has carved deeply into Mesozoic limestones, creating steep walls, caves, and grottos. Among the most significant natural phenomena are Devil's Lake, a deep blue karst lake formed by a cave ceiling collapse, and the Beușnița Waterfalls, famous for their distinct travertine deposits. The park was officially established in 2000 and covers an area of over 36,000 hectares, hosting exceptional biodiversity with many sub-Mediterranean flora and fauna species. Hiking trails partly pass through tunnels carved into the rock during the Ottoman period to ensure safe passage through the rugged terrain. Today, the region is a major ecotourism destination, offering habitat for rare birds of prey and unique botanical species within its pristine wilderness.
