Băile Herculane is the oldest spa resort in Romania and one of the oldest in the world, with a history stretching back to Roman antiquity. Located in the easy on the eye Cerna Valley, the settlement was first documented in 153 AD as 'Ad Aquas Herculi Sacras', dedicated to the demigod Hercules. The Romans developed the site by building baths and temples, attracted by the healing properties of the local sulfurous thermal springs. During the 19th century, under Austro-Hungarian rule, the resort experienced a golden age, which saw the construction of grand buildings in the Vienna Secession style, giving it an aristocratic character. Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) and Emperor Franz Joseph were frequent visitors, significantly boosting its international fame. The historic center, featuring the Statue of Hercules and the Casino, remains an architectural gem despite the urgent need for restoration of many structures. Today, the resort also acts as a gateway to the Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park, famous for its unique flora and dramatic limestone landscapes.
