Motru is a key municipality in Gorj County, located in the Oltenia region of southwestern Romania, set along the banks of the Motru River. The town's modern identity is fundamentally defined by its coal mining heritage, having been largely established and expanded during the mid-20th century to support the nearby lignite extraction basins. Officially declared a town in 1966 and later a municipality in 2000, Motru served as a planned industrial hub, attracting thousands of workers from across the country to fuel Romania's energy sector. The urban landscape is characterized by the systematic socialist architecture of that era, consisting of large residential blocks designed for the mining workforce. In recent years, as the mining industry has undergone restructuring, the city has been seeking to diversify its economy while maintaining its strong labor-based traditions. The surrounding area is composed of the gentle hills of the Getic Subcarpathians, offering scenic views and a transition from the heavy industrial sites to the quiet, traditional Oltenian villages nearby, where old customs and rural life continue to thrive alongside the remnants of the industrial boom.
