Iron Gates (Romania)

Weather…

The Iron Gates is one of the most spectacular gorges on the Danube River, forming a natural border between Romania and Serbia. Stretching over 134 kilometers, it separates the Carpathian Mountains to the north from the Balkan Mountains to the south. The region is famous for its dramatic narrow passages, particularly the Great and Small Kazan Gorges, where the Danube is squeezed into a width of just 150 meters. Between 1964 and 1972, one of Europe's largest hydroelectric power complexes was constructed here, leading to the creation of a massive reservoir that permanently altered the landscape. The dam's construction required the relocation of several settlements and the submergence of the historic Ada Kaleh island. Today, the Iron Gates is a vital national park, preserving a unique blend of Mediterranean flora and striking geological formations. For river navigation, this section represents a technical masterpiece of locks and a crucial international waterway.
