Drobeta-Turnu Severin is located on the left bank of the Danube, near the exit of the Iron Gates gorge, boasting a history that spans over two millennia. In antiquity, it was the site of the Roman castrum Drobeta, which became a significant strategic outpost following Emperor Trajan's conquest of Dacia (101-106 AD). Between 103 and 105 AD, Apollodorus of Damascus constructed Trajan's Bridge here, the longest bridge in the ancient world, measuring approximately 1,135 meters. The medieval period saw the construction of the Severin Fortress, which defended the border regions against Ottoman incursions. The modern city was refounded in 1833 following the Treaty of Adrianople and developed into a major river port and industrial hub. Key landmarks include the remains of the Roman bridge piers, the Water Tower, and the Palace of Culture, reflecting the city's transition from an ancient military stronghold to a modern European urban center.
