Bigăr Waterfall (Romania)

Weather…

The Bigăr Waterfall, located in the Anina Mountains of southwestern Romania, was long considered one of the most unusual waterfalls in the world. It is situated exactly on the 45th parallel in Caraș-Severin County and is part of the Nera Gorges-Beușnița National Park. The water originates from the Bigăr Spring, emerging from an underground cave and flowing over a bell-shaped travertine rock covered in moss into the Miniș River. This combination of lively green moss and thread-like falling water created an almost magical aesthetic. In June 2021, a large portion of the travertine rock collapsed due to its own weight and natural erosion processes, permanently altering the waterfall's appearance. Nevertheless, the site remains a significant geological monument illustrating the dynamic processes of karst landscapes. The surrounding region features numerous hiking trails and smaller caves, highlighting the tourist appeal of the Miniș Valley.
