Turda Gorge (Romania)

Weather…

The Turda Gorge (Cheile Turzii) is a significant natural reserve in western Romania, located just a few kilometers from the city of Turda. Carved by the Hășdate River into the Jurassic limestone of the Trascău Mountains, the gorge spans approximately 1.3 kilometers in length. It is renowned for its sheer vertical walls, which rise up to 200 meters, making it a premier destination for rock climbing in the region. Established as a protected area in 1938, the reserve hosts an incredible biodiversity of over 1,000 plant species and 67 bird species. A notable botanical highlight is Allium obliquum, a rare plant species more commonly found in Central Asia. The gorge also features over 60 caves, the largest being more than 120 meters long. Hikers can follow a well-marked trail with four suspension bridges over the river, providing close-up views of the dramatic rock formations, sharp ridges, and deep abysses characteristic of this karst landscape.
