St. Michael's Church Cluj (Romania)

Weather…

St. Michael's Church in Cluj-Napoca is a premier example of Gothic architecture in Southeast Europe, dominating the city's Unirii Square. Construction began around 1350 and continued for over a century, concluding roughly in 1480. As the second-largest Gothic hall church in Romania, it holds immense historical and religious significance. Its neo-Gothic tower, added between 1837 and 1860, reaches a height of 80 meters, making it the tallest church tower in the country. The interior is a treasure trove of medieval art, including 14th-century frescoes, a masterfully carved Baroque pulpit, and several historic altars. Historically, the church served as a venue for numerous sessions of the Transylvanian Diet and the inauguration ceremonies of several princes. The main portal features the coat of arms of Sigismund of Luxembourg and a relief of Archangel Michael, the city's patron saint. A comprehensive restoration project completed in 2022 has revitalized the structure, preserving its intricate stonework and historical heritage for future generations.
