Mud Volcanoes

The Mud Volcanoes of Berca (Vulcanii Noroioși) in Buzău County are a rare geological phenomenon and a protected botanical reserve. They are formed by natural gases rising from about 3,000 meters deep, pushing clay, mud, and salt water to the surface. As the mud dries, it creates conical structures resembling miniature volcanoes, while more liquid eruptions form bubbling mud pools. The landscape is largely devoid of vegetation due to high soil salinity, resulting in a cracked, lunar-like terrain with deep erosion furrows. The reserve is divided into two primary sites: Pâclele Mari (Big Pâcle) and Pâclele Mici (Small Pâcle). Botanically, the area is significant for hosting rare salt-tolerant plants like Nitraria schoberi and Obione verrucifera. This unique site provides a dynamic environment where the size and shape of the 'craters' constantly change depending on gas pressure and rainfall, making it a fascination for geologists and tourists alike.
