Râmnicu Sărat is a historic town in Buzău County, located at the crossroads of Wallachia and Moldavia. It was first mentioned in 1439 in a trade charter issued by Prince Vlad Dracul, highlighting its early importance as a commercial hub. The town's strategic location made it a frequent site of military engagements, most notably the 1789 Battle of Rymnik during the Russo-Turkish War. In the 20th century, the town gained a somber reputation due to its maximum-security prison, used by the communist regime to detain and torture political dissidents. Known as the "Prison of Silence," this site is currently being transformed into a memorial museum dedicated to the victims of communism. Beyond its modern history, Râmnicu Sărat features significant cultural heritage, such as the Dormition of the Theotokos Monastery, built in 1691 in the ornate Brâncovenesc style. Visitors can also explore the Municipal Museum, which houses archaeological and ethnographic collections. The town's atmosphere is characterized by a blend of old merchant houses and modern developments, serving as a gateway to the nearby mountains.
