The city has a rich medieval history, founded by Transylvanian Saxon settlers. The most impressive landmark is the 12th-century Evangelical Lutheran Church, a massive Romanesque and Gothic structure that dominates the city center. Sebeș also retains portions of its medieval city walls and several guild towers.
