Câlnic Fortress (Romania)

Weather…

Câlnic Fortress is one of the most distinctive residential and defensive structures in Transylvania, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. It was built in the 13th century by the Saxon Count Chyl de Kelling as a noble residence, but was later purchased and fortified by the local peasant community in the 15th century. The centerpiece of the complex is the 'Siegfried' donjon, a massive 13th-century tower that served both as a residence and a stronghold with thick defensive walls. The fortress is surrounded by two concentric rings of walls and features a small chapel decorated with frescoes and storage rooms for supplies used during sieges. Unlike many other Saxon fortified structures, Câlnic is located in a low-lying area, a disadvantage compensated for by its thick walls and a formerly water-filled moat. Today, the fortress serves as an international cultural center, hosting exhibitions on Transylvanian Saxon history and medieval art.
