Alba Carolina Citadel (Romania)

Weather…

The Alba Carolina Citadel in Alba Iulia is the largest and best-preserved Vauban-style fortress in Southeast Europe. Constructed between 1715 and 1738 under the direction of Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti by order of Emperor Charles VI of Habsburg, the star-shaped fortress features seven bastions and covers an area of approximately 110 hectares. It was built on the site of the ancient Roman castrum of Apulum and a medieval fortress, reflecting the location's strategic importance for nearly two millennia. Architectural highlights include six monumental Baroque gates adorned with elaborate sculptures and reliefs depicting mythological and military scenes. Within its walls stand two significant landmarks: the Roman Catholic St. Michael's Cathedral and the Coronation Cathedral, where King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie of Romania were crowned in 1922. The citadel was the site of pivotal historical events, most notably the Great National Assembly on December 1, 1918, which proclaimed the union of Transylvania with Romania. Today, Alba Carolina is a major cultural hub, famous for its daily guard changing ceremony and extensively restored tourist routes.
