Alba Iulia, set in the heart of Transylvania along the Mureș River, is widely regarded as the spiritual and historical capital of Romania. Its origins trace back to the Roman Empire, when the fortress of Apulum stood as the largest city in the Dacia province and the headquarters of the 13th Gemina Legion. Throughout the Middle Ages, the city evolved into a major political and religious center, eventually serving as the capital of the Principality of Transylvania. The city's defining landmark is the Alba Carolina Citadel, a massive star-shaped fortification built in the Vauban style during the 18th century under Habsburg rule. Spanning 70 hectares with seven bastions, it is one of the most complete and impressive defensive works in Europe. Inside its walls, history comes alive through monuments like the St. Michael's Roman Catholic Cathedral, housing the sarcophagus of the national hero John Hunyadi, and the Reunification Cathedral, where King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria were crowned in a magnificent ceremony in 1922. For Romanians, Alba Iulia is synonymous with the Great Union of December 1st, 1918, when Transylvania's assembly voted to join the Kingdom of Romania in the Union Hall. Today, the city is a hub of cultural tourism, having undergone significant restoration to its historical core. The local economy is bolstered by education, light industry, and a thriving hospitality sector. Visitors are drawn to the daily ceremonial changing of the guard, the intricate baroque gates, and the ancient Roman ruins. As a university town, Alba Iulia balances its deep historical roots with a dynamic, modern atmosphere, hosting numerous festivals and academic conferences year-round. The historic fortress city of Alba Iulia has seen a rise in international day-trippers, particularly from German-speaking countries and Hungary, since Romania's full Schengen accession on 1 January 2025.
