Detunatele (Romania)

Weather…

Detunatele are two prominent geological formations of basalt columns located in the Apuseni Mountains in Alba County. They consist of Detunata Goală and Detunata Flocoasă, with the former being particularly impressive due to its lack of vegetation and clearly visible grey rock walls. These volcanic structures were formed approximately 7 million years ago during the late Miocene as a result of rapid lava cooling. The basalt columns often exhibit an excellent hexagonal shape and reach altitudes of up to 1258 meters above sea level. The name is derived from the Romanian word for thunder, referring to the sound produced by falling stones on the steep slopes. Since 1969, the formations have been protected as natural monuments to preserve their unique prismatic structures. Geologically, they are among the most important basalt occurrences in Transylvania, attracting both researchers and tourists due to their unusual and striking geometry.
