💡 Tips
- Early mornings are essential for bird watching on Pipeline Road; the rainforest comes alive before the heat sets in.
- There are no major supermarkets in Gamboa, so bring most of your snacks and drinks from Panama City.
- Mosquitoes can be intense in the rainforest; use strong DEET repellent and wear long, light-colored clothing.
- Internet and cell reception can be spotty; download maps and bird-call apps offline before you arrive.
- The public bus (SACA) from Panama City is cheap but infrequent; renting a car or taking a taxi gives you much more freedom.

Gamboa is a small town and research hub located at the strategic confluence of the Chagres River and Lake Gatun, deep within the Panama Canal watershed. Originally built as a housing site for canal workers, it has transformed into a world-renowned center for tropical biology and ecological research, largely due to the presence of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Surrounded by the lush rainforests of Soberania National Park, Gamboa gives unparalleled opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife observation. The town retains much of its historic charm with wooden houses on stilts, designed to provide ventilation in the humid climate. Gamboa is also the base for the Dredging Division of the Panama Canal, which ensures the waterway remains navigable. Its unique position makes it a vital point for both the mechanical operation of the canal and the preservation of Panama's rich biodiversity.
