Fuerte de San Miguel (Panama)

Weather…

Fuerte de San Miguel is a historic fortress located near the town of Chuy in the Rocha department, right on the border with Brazil. It was built by the Portuguese in 1734 on a hill to consolidate their position in southern Brazil. The fort is smaller than the nearby Fortaleza de Santa Teresa but of similar strategic importance. Completed in 1737, it is characterized by its irregular quadrilateral shape and the use of local, pink-hued granite. In 1763, the fort was captured by the Spanish, who reinforced it. After the wars of independence, the fort lost its military relevance and fell into ruin. Similar to Santa Teresa, it was restored in the 1930s under the direction of historian Horacio Arredondo. Today, it houses a museum of military history and indigenous culture and is surrounded by a national park. The fort provides a glimpse into the colonial history of the region and the territorial disputes between the Spanish and Portuguese empires.
