Fuerte San Jerónimo (Panama)

Weather…

Fort San Jeronimo is a massive colonial defensive structure located in the historic town of Portobelo, on Panama's Caribbean coast. Built by the Spanish to protect one of their most important treasure ports, it was designed to withstand naval attacks from pirates and rival European powers. The fort's thick walls, constructed from coral stone and volcanic rock, still house a formidable array of iron cannons facing the entrance of the bay. It was a key part of the 'Flota de Indias' system, where silver from the mines of Peru was exchanged for European goods. Today, the ruins of San Jeronimo are a UNESCO World Heritage site, providing a tangible link to the 'Golden Age of Piracy' and the high stakes of global trade in the 17th and 18th centuries.
