Cerro Bruja is a mountain located in Chagres National Park, near the watershed of the Panama Canal. Its name, which means 'Witch Mountain', comes from local legends and the mystical fog that often shrouds the mountain. The area is covered by a dense, humid tropical rainforest, which is essential for maintaining the water supply of the Panama Canal. The mountain and its surroundings have an extremely rich biodiversity and are an important habitat for numerous bird and mammal species, including the jaguar and tapir. Cerro Bruja is not a typical tourist destination due to its difficult accessibility; the area is mainly used for scientific research and conservation. The indigenous Emberá communities living at the foot of the mountain have deep cultural ties to the forest and the mountain.

Accessing this rugged area usually involves arranging transport into Chagres National Park from nearby communities in the Panama province. Reaching the trailheads often requires navigating rough dirt roads or occasionally utilizing river transport.

The dry season, spanning roughly from mid-December to April, is the most practical time for traversing the dense jungle paths. The rainy season transforms the trails into deep mud and swells the rivers, making hiking exceedingly difficult and often dangerous.

Hikers will encounter a classic tropical rainforest environment, featuring steep, muddy inclines choked with thick, tangled vegetation. Trails are often faintly marked, heavily overgrown, and require traversing numerous streams and slippery tree roots.

What to bring

Waterproof, knee-high rubber boots are often the best footwear choice against the pervasive mud and insects found in this jungle. A reliable machete for clearing brush, comprehensive first-aid supplies, and copious amounts of water are highly recommended.

Parking is usually informal and restricted to small clearings near the entry communities or local guard stations bordering the park. It is strongly advised to hire a local guide, who can also help secure a safe spot for any personal vehicles.

Getting thoroughly lost in the dense, featureless jungle is a remarkably high risk, making an experienced local guide almost mandatory. Be constantly vigilant for venomous snakes, stinging insects, and the threat of sudden river flash floods.
