Cerro Jefe (Panama)

Weather…

Cerro Jefe is a mountain peak and protected area in the eastern part of Chagres National Park. The area is known for its unique and isolated cloud forest ecosystem, which formed at a lower altitude than most Central American cloud forests. This special microclimate is home to numerous rare and endemic plant species, including many orchids and bromeliads. Cerro Jefe was one of the last known habitats of the Panamanian golden frog (Atelopus zeteki) in the wild. The area is also used as a research site by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), where the effects of climate change on tropical ecosystems are studied. The summit has impressive views of the Gulf of Panama and the surrounding plains. Access to the area is restricted due to its protected status.
