Cerro Gaital (Panama)

Weather…

Cerro Gaital is a prominent mountain peak rising to 1,185 meters above sea level, located on the northern edge of El Valle de Antón in Coclé Province. It forms part of the rim of a massive extinct volcanic caldera, which is celebrated as one of the largest inhabited craters in the world. The summit area is blanketed in dense cloud forest, providing a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna, including rare orchids and the critically endangered Panamanian Golden Frog. Due to its steep terrain and frequently misty conditions, the hike to the top is considered strenuous but rewards visitors with sweeping views of the valley and the Pacific coastline. The Cerro Gaital Natural Monument was officially designated in 1995 to safeguard this fragile ecosystem from environmental degradation. Geologically, the peak consists of volcanic rock formations resulting from the volcano's last active period, approximately 300,000 years ago.
