Researchers have documented 23 species of plants that are strictly endemic to this specific mountain range, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth. The mountains are covered in dense moist tropical forest and act as a vital watershed for the surrounding lowlands and coastal towns of western Jamaica. Recognized as a high-priority conservation area, it was established as a Forest Reserve to safeguard its unique genetic resources.
