Szekszárd serves as the seat of Tolna County and is one of Hungary's most pleasant county capitals, located at the meeting point of the Szekszárd Hills and the Great Plain. The city's history dates back to Roman antiquity, when it was an important military settlement known as Alisca. In 1061, King Béla I established a Benedictine abbey here, the ruins of which remain visible today in the courtyard of the Neoclassical County Hall. Szekszárd is internationally renowned for its winemaking traditions, particularly the full-bodied 'Szekszárd Bikavér' (Bull's Blood) and the spicy Kadarka variety grown on local loess soil. The city's architectural landscape is defined by elegant Zopf and Neoclassical buildings, including the County Hall designed by the famed architect Mihály Pollack. It is also the birthplace of the prominent Hungarian poet Mihály Babits, with his childhood home now serving as a dedicated memorial museum. Major cultural events like the Szekszárd Harvest Days draw large crowds every year to celebrate the town's deep-rooted connection to viticulture. Today, Szekszárd balances its administrative functions with a growing emphasis on wine tourism and high-quality local gastronomy.
