Simontornya Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Situated on the banks of the Sió River, Simontornya Castle is a unique architectural gem tracing the evolution from a medieval residential tower to a grand Renaissance palace. Its name originates from Simon, son of Salamon, who commissioned the original tower in the 1270s. The castle reached its zenith under Mózes Buzlay, Grand Marshal to King Vladislaus II, who transformed the fortress into a magnificent Renaissance residence between 1508 and 1524. During this period, Italian craftsmen added elegant loggias, finely carved window frames, and ornate fireplaces that represent the highest artistic standards of the age. During the Ottoman occupation, the castle served as a provincial administrative center, which protected it from the destruction that befell many other Hungarian border forts. In the 18th century, it was used as a granary by the Esterházy family, a function that inadvertently preserved its structural integrity. Systematic archaeological excavations and restoration in the 1960s and 70s revealed its hidden architectural treasures, making it one of Hungary's premier sites for Renaissance history.
