Basilica of Eger (Hungary)

Weather…

The Basilica of Eger, officially the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, is the second-largest church in Hungary and a premier example of Neoclassical architecture. This monumental building was constructed between 1831 and 1837 based on the designs of the renowned architect József Hild, commissioned by Archbishop János László Pyrker. The facade features a grand portico with Corinthian columns and monumental statues of saints crafted by the Italian sculptor Marco Casagrande. Inside, the basilica's vast space is topped by a dome reaching a height of 54 meters, decorated with elaborate frescoes that were only completed in the mid-20th century. The basilica's organ is among the largest and most impressive instruments in Hungary, frequently serving as the centerpiece for major classical and sacred music concerts. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Eger, the building is a significant cultural landmark that dominates the skyline of this historic city.
