Heroes' Square
Heroes' Square, or Hősök tere, is one of the grandest and most significant public squares in Budapest, located at the end of Andrássy Avenue. Its centerpiece is the Millennium Monument, which was commissioned in 1896 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Magyar settlement in the Carpathian Basin. Atop the 36-meter central column stands a statue of Archangel Gabriel, holding the Holy Crown and the double cross of Hungary. At the base of the column are bronze equestrian statues of the seven chieftains who led the Hungarian tribes in the 9th century. The two semi-circular colonnades behind them feature statues of influential kings and national leaders who shaped the country's destiny. Flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Műcsarnok Art Gallery, the square serves as a monumental gateway to the City Park. As part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, Heroes' Square is a primary venue for national celebrations and remains a powerful symbol of Hungarian identity and history. Its open layout is designed to accommodate massive public gatherings and ceremonies.
