Andrássy Avenue
Andrássy Avenue is the most iconic boulevard in Budapest, constructed between 1872 and 1876 to connect the city center with the City Park. In 2002, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the Millennium Underground Railway running beneath it. The avenue is lined with spectacular Neo-Renaissance mansions and palaces, designed by renowned architects for the Hungarian aristocracy of the 19th century. Notable landmarks along the road include the Hungarian State Opera House, the House of Terror Museum, and numerous high-end boutiques and embassies. Underneath the pavement runs the oldest electrified underground line in continental Europe, inaugurated in 1896 for the Millennium celebrations. Today, Andrássy Avenue serves as a central cultural and social hub, showcasing the grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian era. Its unique architectural harmony and historical significance make it for anyone exploring the Hungarian capital.
