Habitation Le Vieux (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation Le Vieux is one of the oldest documented plantation sites in the Grande Anse region of southwestern Haiti. Originally founded in the late 17th century, it served as a pioneering model for large-scale agriculture in the colony. The estate was renowned for its production of cocoa and spices, which were exported directly to European markets. The main house, built in a rustic colonial style, testifies to the early settlement phase and architectural adaptations to the tropical climate. Due to its isolated location, the habitation remained spared from major conflicts for long periods, facilitating the preservation of several original structures. Throughout the 19th century, the focus shifted toward subsistence farming for the local population. Today, the site is frequently cited as an example of the evolution of Creole architecture and agriculture. The dense surrounding forests provide the location with a unique and evocative historical atmosphere.
