The Akyem Gold Mine is located in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region of Ghana. It is a large-scale open-pit operation also managed by the Newmont Corporation. Production at the site commenced in October 2013, following an extensive period of exploration and infrastructure development. Akyem is characterized by its high operational efficiency and the use of modern mining technologies. The mine consists of a large main pit and a processing facility that treats ore through grinding and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. Newmont places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability at Akyem, initiating comprehensive reforestation and biodiversity programs, particularly given the mine's proximity to forest reserves. The mine is one of Ghana's largest taxpayers and a major economic driver for the Birim District. This large-scale open-pit gold mine in the Eastern Region is operated to high safety and environmental standards by Newmont. It provides significant employment and royalty revenues to the local communities.

Visiting

The mine site is closed to the public for safety reasons. The best one can do is drive along the perimeter fence and observe the pit edge from a public road near the town of Odumase.

A designated lookout point on the Birim River side has a panoramic view of the open-pit and waste rock dumps. The mine also has a community relations office that may provide information.

Gold bullion is the output, with no direct sales to visitors. Local markets in Odumase and Koforidua sell handcrafted gold items, but the mine itself does not offer tours or souvenirs.
