Weimar is globally renowned as the center of German Classicism and the birthplace of the Bauhaus, granting this Thuringian city an extraordinary cultural density. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, intellectual giants such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller worked here, transforming Weimar into a spiritual heart of Europe. The era of Weimar Classicism is preserved through numerous memorial sites, including Goethe's residence and the famous Duchess Anna Amalia Library. In 1919, the Weimar Constitution was adopted here, establishing the first parliamentary democracy on German soil and giving the Weimar Republic its name. That same year, Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus, which revolutionized modern architecture and design. Despite its cultural legacy, the city's history is also shadowed by its proximity to the former Buchenwald concentration camp.
