The independent city of Hof is located in the Upper Franconia district and forms the economic and cultural center of the Bavarian Vogtland. Geographically, the city is situated on the Saxon Saale river, set between the Franconian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains in close proximity to the borders of Thuringia and Saxony. Historically, Hof was first mentioned in a document in 1214 under the name Curia Variscorum and later developed into a significant location for the textile and porcelain industries. A cultural highlight is the annual Hof International Film Festival, which is one of the most important industry events in Germany. Notable buildings include the Neo-Gothic town hall and the Freiheitshalle, which serves as the largest event hall in the region. The nearby Untreusee lake also gives extensive recreational areas for residents and visitors to the city.
