Gotha is a former residential city in Thuringia, its history deeply intertwined with the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which produced numerous European monarchs. The cityscape is dominated by Friedenstein Castle, Germany's largest early Baroque palace complex dating from the 17th century. The castle houses significant collections and the Ekhof Theatre, the world's oldest palace theater with its original stage machinery still intact. Gotha was also a major hub for publishing and geography, achieving global fame through the name 'Justus Perthes.' The city features a historic old town with a magnificent town hall and numerous Renaissance buildings. The Gotha tramway, specifically the Thuringian Forest Railway that runs deep into the Thuringian Forest, is a unique technical feature of the region. The blend of princely splendor, scientific tradition, and Thuringian hospitality defines the city's character.
