Bamberg in Upper Franconia is a Bavarian city whose historic city center has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. The city remained largely intact during the Second World War, which is why it now possesses one of Europe's largest fully preserved old town ensembles. The architecture is divided into three historic districts: the Hill Town (Bergstadt), the Island Town (Inselstadt), and the Gardeners' Town (Gärtnerstadt), each of which performed different functions in the urban structure. The four-towered Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George houses the tomb of the holy imperial couple Henry II and Cunigunde, as well as the famous Bamberg Horseman. The city is also known for its deep-seated beer tradition with nine independent breweries, with smoked beer (Rauchbier) being a world-famous specialty. As a university city and location of the archbishopric, Bamberg today combines rich history with lively academic and ecclesiastical life.

After exploring the Residence and its Rose Garden, end your day with a traditional smoked beer in historic Sandstraße.
This bike tour takes you across Bamberg's hills. After starting in the Gardeners' District, cycle along the river before the climbs to Michelsberg and Altenburg test your fitness. The reward is a sweeping view over the Regnitz valley. Finish by coasting back down to the old town for a well-deserved refreshment.
