Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes (Germany)

Weather…

The Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes in the Thuringian Forest are considered the most colorful show caves in the world and have held a Guinness World Record to that effect since 2014. They originated from a former alum slate mine called 'Jeremias Glück,' which operated from the 16th to the 19th century. After mining was discontinued in 1860, nature transformed the abandoned mine over several decades into an underground wonderland. Mineral-rich dripping water formed countless stalactites and stalagmites in over 100 different shades, caused by iron oxides, manganese, and various other minerals. Re-discovered in 1910, the grottoes were opened to the public as early as 1914. The 'Fairytale Dome' is particularly impressive, as its reflections in the crystal-clear water create a magical backdrop. In addition to the grottoes, the site now includes the 'Grottoneum' interactive museum and 'Feenweltchen,' a theme park for families that blends mining tradition with elements of fantasy.
