Bamberg Cathedral (Germany)

Weather…

Bamberg Cathedral, dedicated to St. Peter and St. George, is one of Germany's most important imperial cathedrals with its four striking towers and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The current late Romanesque-early Gothic structure was consecrated in 1237 after two predecessor buildings were destroyed by fires. Unique is the tomb of Pope Clement II, which represents the only surviving papal tomb north of the Alps. Another significant monument is the high tomb of the imperial couple Henry II and Cunigunde, crafted by Tilman Riemenschneider. World-famous is the sculpture of the Bamberg Rider, whose identity remains a mystery to this day and is regarded as one of the most important works of medieval European sculpture. The Marienaltar by Veit Stoß and the elaborately designed portals like the Adamspforte complete the rich artistic heritage. Situated on one of Bamberg's seven hills, the cathedral maintains a monumental presence over the historic old town.
