The more than 1200-year-old city of Schleswig is picturesquely situated at the end of the Schlei fjord and was once one of the most significant centers of power in Northern Europe. Today, it is primarily its fascinating Viking history that attracts visitors from all over the world. Just a stone's throw from the center lies legendary Haithabu, one of the most important trading metropolises of the Viking Age and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, amidst faithfully reconstructed clay houses, you can truly feel early medieval life come alive. Another jewel of the city is the majestic Gottorf Castle, the former residence of the dukes. Today, it houses two fantastic state museums, the baroque Globushaus garden, and vast historical art collections. Anyone walking through Schleswig should not miss the imposing Schleswig Cathedral, home to the famous intricately carved 16th-century Bordesholm Altar. For a purely idyllic atmosphere, visit the "Holm," the city's ancient fishermen's settlement, where crooked, rose-covered fishermen's cottages cluster tightly around a small cemetery. Time seems to have stood still here. Fresh local fish dishes perfectly round off any visit.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
