Annual city festival in late August in the town center with live music, family programs and Sunday shopping. Enlivens Rendsburg's center on a late summer weekend.
Located right in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein, Rendsburg is inextricably linked to the gigantic Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal), the busiest artificial waterway in the world. The absolute architectural masterpiece of the city is the Rendsburg High Bridge, a monumental steel railway bridge completed in 1913. Suspended beneath it is the historic transporter bridge (Schwebefähre), which glides pedestrians and cars directly across the shipping lane of giant ocean liners, a truly unique experience. Another maritime highlight is the ship greeting station along the canal, where passing cruise ships and freighters are welcomed by the playing of their national anthems, while visitors enjoy homemade cakes at the adjacent cafe. Beyond the romanticism of the canal, Rendsburg features a fascinating historic town center clustered around the massive Paradeplatz. As a former garrison town, it features grid-patterned streets and impressive Baroque buildings. The Jewish Museum and the striking Arsenal building tell compelling stories of the region's past. Furthermore, situated directly on the Eider River, Rendsburg is a prime hub for spectacular cycling and hiking routes.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
