Lake Plön (Germany)

Weather…

The Großer Plöner See is the largest lake in Schleswig-Holstein and the remarkable centerpiece of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. Spanning 28 square kilometers, it was formed during the last Ice Age and is famous for its crystal-clear water and its over 30 islands, which provide a vital sanctuary for rare birds. The lake is overlooked by the Plön Castle, one of the most significant Renaissance and Baroque palaces in Northern Germany, which served as a residence for Danish kings and Prussian princes. Today, the lake is a premier destination for sailing, canoeing, and recreation, offering an excellent mix of aristocratic history and wild, watery nature. It is the heart of a landscape characterized by rolling hills and ancient beech forests.

Getting there
Lake Plön is exceptionally well accessible via federal highways and trains due to its central location in Schleswig-Holstein. Numerous lakeside towns, including the pleasant town of Plön itself, offer direct access.
📅
Best season
The summer months are by far the most popular time for water sports enthusiasts, sailors, and eager bathers. Spring and autumn also strongly invite extended bicycle and walking tours across this vast lake landscape.

Terrain & paths
Around the largest lake in the state, visitors will find excellently maintained, mostly flat cycling and hiking paths. The extensive shorelines vary beautifully between well-kept promenades, sandy beaches, and nature.
🎒
What to bring
For an active day out, comfortable walking or cycling shoes are highly recommended, alongside wind or sun protection. Those planning to use the water sports facilities should confidently pack appropriate swim gear.
